Most corals use alkalinity to form their structure which is made up primarily of calcium carbonate. Corals convert alkalinity (bicarbonates) into carbonates

which forms the coral reef structure.

As all coral reefs require calcium and alkalinity, they also require the element magnesium. This element is needed to moderate the reef building process and must be replenished regularly to ensure healthy reef growth and sustainability.
